COIN PRICING INFORMATION CONTENT

Coin Estimates : There are some basic facts you will need to know before you attempt to determine an estimated value of your coins. Most people who visit this site are not active coin collectors and need to know the value of a coin or collection they might have while having no idea where to begin. That is the purpose of this site, to help you determine the estimated retail book value of your coin or collection of coins. Rule number one is never say that a coin is in "good" condition, good is a term used to describe an inferior coin. So, since you have a coin in "good condition" you will need to know how "good" its condition level is. There are many levels of quality for collectible coins

Coin Price Lists : Coin price lists are indeed listed on this site and you will be lead to the links you need further down this webpage. Simply looking at a price list or trying to read through the complex terms in coins books will leave you quite confused when you have no knoweledge of Numismatics (the science invlolved when collecting coins on a serious scale) This online coin price estimates site will teach you four steps to determining the value of collectible coins.

Selling Coins : Your goal is to learn enough about your coin to offer them for sale to collectors. In order to offer your coins for sale, you need to be able to describe your coins. Again, "good" is a term used to describe a circulated inferior coin. Do not trust the word of a dealer in a coin shop. Coin dealers are out to make a profit and most will not inform you of the true book value of coins you might have to offer, that is not bad of them, it is simply a must for them in order to profit from buying your coins. They will not inform you of the condition level and will offer only a very small portion of the actual value of your coins.

Knoweledge is power! Learn everything you can about your coins before selling them. Normally, it would take many years to learn what you need to know in order to get a fair price for your coins. You will learn everything you need to know in order to estimate the potential value of your collectible coins

Determine the estimated value of your coins : You may or may not have a coin or collection worth quite a bit of money! There are many coins that are worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars (a very few are worth millions!) The value of your coin will depend mostly on the condition / quality level of the coin. The age and rarity level of coins will have a dramatic impact on the value. The date and mintmark will also have an effect on the value (a mint mark location chart is provided in the PicGrade Area described below) If your coin is a misprint, those are also worth quite a bit but it is harder to determine the value of misprinted coins. The information you will need to help you determine how much a coin is worth is posted below.

If you take the proper steps, with the right information, you can sell your coin or collection for its true book value! You will need to sell your coins to collectors by marketing them yourself or allowing a third party service to market your coins for you, but you can do this only after you have collected accurate information on the coins you offer for sale.

To estimate the value of collectible coins, you must first determine the condition level for your coins. There are 6-7 main levels of quality for each type of U.S. circulated coin, there are 10 levels of condition for mint condition uncirculated coins! It is extremely important that you determine the condition level for your coins before you sell them.

DO NOT CLEAN COINS ~ Never clean coins, cleaning coins makes them less desirable to buyers. A coin can have discoloration and marks on it, this is expected for both mint condition coins and circulated coins. On mint condition coins, the fewer marks, the higher the value. On circulated coins, the more original details on the coin, the higher the value.

Determine the type of coin you have. Most coins will tell the denomonation or face value of the coin on the reverse tails side.

Determine the Mint Mark : MINT MARKS ~ A mint mark is a letter which may appear on a coin to indicate the U.S. mint facility at which the coin was produced. The mint mark location differs on each type of U.S. coin. Mint marks on U.S. coins are :

MINT MARK LETTERS :
P for coins produced in Philadelphia, PA. Coins without a mint mark are usually produced at the Philadelphia mint, some coins have the letter P to represent that they are produced at Philadelphia.
D for coins produced at Denver, CO. All coins produced at Denver will have the mint mark letter D
S for coins produced at San Fancisco, CA. Most coins produced at San Francisco have the mint mark letter S. Some special coins produced at San Francisco have no mint mark.
O for coins produced at New Orleans, LA. All coins produced at the old New Orleans mint have the letter O. The New Orleans mint is no longer in exsistance.
CC for coins produced at Carson City, Nevada. All coins produced at Carson City have the mint mark letters CC. The Carson City Mint is no longer in exsitance
W for coins produced at West Point, NY. Some west point coins have no mint mark, most W mint mark coins are special silver coins produced for collectors and investors only.
If you are not sure what a mint mark is, or where the mint mark is on your coin or collection of coins, be sure to see the mint mark location chart in the Picgrade Area as described below

Coins wear down in circulation, there are various levels of wear, the amount of wear will impact the quality level for your coins. Even mint condition coins have several levels of quality. You absolutely must determine the condition level of your coins if you plan to sell them at a fair price. Normally, this would require you to view actual coins of the same type of the coins you have in each of at least 7 condition levels. This would most likely involve spending hundreds or thousands of dollars to obtain a coin in each condition level. Although you could re-sale the coins, this is not a practical choice for most people. Posted below is a basic list of coin condition levels with a basic description specific to the main condition level for coins in general.

Good ~ Very heavily Worn with even wear over the entire coin surface. Artwork is outlined but may lack outline on portions of the coin. Letters and digits are incomplete with some completely worn away. A coin rim may not be present

V Good ~ A small amount of moderate wear mixed with a large amount of very heavy wear. The artwork will show outline only with no fine line art details present. Letters and digits will be incomplete with some letters absent, only portions of the rim will show

Fine ~ A small amount of heavy wear mixed with a large amount of moderate wear over the entire coin surface. Letters and digits are heavily worn into the rim of the coin, some small letters will be absent from any devices featuring wording in the artwork. Rim is near complete

V Fine ~ Moderate even wear over the entire coin surface with small portions of heavy wear, will show a modest amount of detail on some of the smaller fine line artwork. Rim is complete

E Fine / Extremely Fine ~ Slight to moderate even wear over the entire coins surface, all letters and digits must be sharp and bold, most fine line artwork details will be visible.

Near Uncirculated / About Uncirculated ~ Slight to moderate wear on only the highest portions of the coins design.

Mint State / Mint Condition ~ No trace of wear from circulation. May lack some details on coin types known to have defects from the time of production, such as incomplete steps on Jefferson Nickels, incomplete bell lines on Franklin Halves and incomplete skirt lines on Walking Liberty Half Dollars.

FIRST AND VERY IMPORTANT! You do not want to just walk into a coin shop and say "I have a coin in good condition". That is the first mistake, also the worst mistake! From that point, you are trapped. "Good condition" is the term used to describe the second lowest condition on the coin grading scale!

The study and purchasing of coins is a science, a science known as Numismatics. The poeple who sell and purchase coins for a living (Numismatists / Coin Scientists) have many years of experience and you are no challenge at all if you have never dealt with coins.

IF YOU HAVE COIN OR COLLECTION WHICH YOU FEEL IS MOST LIKELY VERY RARE AND VALUABLE HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO!

Click here and see the top of the page, click on the orange button which reads "Selling Info". Read the information on "Raw" coins. Read the information about Certified Coins too. If your coin is in a regular coin holder, or in no coin holder, it is known to investors and collectors as a "raw coin" or "non certified coin". A raw uncertified coin is a risk to buyers who will pay high prices for a rare coin. To purhcase a non certified raw coin at a high premium price is a major risk. Collectors and investors know this. Your coin is only valuable to the top collectors if your coin is certified. See details by clicking on the banner above then click on the "Selling Info" button at the top of the page.
